WINDSOR WORKS
Contemporary Fine Wood Furniture

A note from Founder, Thomas Zano
Picture
I began woodworking around 1978 as a hobby.  My primary interest at that time was to educate myself in the art of construction of wood furniture and to create functional pieces for my own use.   With a few basic tools and my interest, I learned techniques mostly by trial and error, occasionally taking a workshop from “professionals”.   In the 1980’s I took classes in making contemporary Windsor style chairs and fell in love with the craft.

I started displaying work in various galleries and a shows in the 1990’s.  I have contributed to the Dairy Barn’s “Works in Wood” show.    I have displayed and sold pieces featured in galleries in Colorado and New Mexico as well as locally.

I enjoy using highly “figured” woods of exceptional grain character and combinations of contrasting yet complimentary woods, which I seek out for my pieces.  I have experimented with simple straight-line design elements, bevels, tapers, and “shaped” surfaces, as you will see on my gallery page, always maintaining the functional integrity of the furniture.  My main motivation for working in wood is a love of the medium and for finely crafted hand-made furniture.

For over two hundred years, Windsor Chairs have been produced in a variety of styles by superior craft people.  In keeping with the tradition that has produced heirlooms appreciated and handed down generation after generation, I have likewise, attempted to create pieces that will endure the ravages of time and promise to be the “heirlooms of the future”.   Each handcrafted piece is carefully designed and worked to create aesthetic appeal and rugged durability.  The Windsor construction methods are renown for strong and durable joints, integrity, and longevity.  Each piece is signed and represents a unique and custom piece.  Even pieces that look identical, differ in small design elements, as everything is hand shaped and hand turned.  There are no mechanical mass-production or duplication techniques employed.

I enjoy producing pieces of beauty and functionality mixing varieties of native hardwoods and some exotic imported species as well.  Combinations of woods, as illustrated in the Gallery, use hardwoods such as Curly Maple or Birdseye Maple and Curly Cherry or Hickory and Black Walnut.  A variety of  Stool and Chair styles are available.  Several sizes of stools are available in both 3 and 4 legged varieties.   I also produce contemporary designs of antique-style Round and Oval tables,  Veneered Rectangular Coffee and Hall Tables with inlaid accents,  solid wood Dressers and Jewelry Chests that have been constructed using the handcut dovetail technique or ones with a simpler joinery .

Some stock items are available immediately and custom orders and commissions are welcome.
